A new era has begun for Japan as Emperor Naruhito completes enthronement in a ceremony rich with history and ritual. Although he officially became emperor on May 1 of 2019, after his father — now Emperor Emeritus Akihito — stepped down from the throne due to his advanced age, Tuesday’s ceremony marks the official declaration of Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement.
Today, the Japanese emperor has become a ceremonial and unifying figure, similar to monarchs in the United Kingdom, Norway, and Spain. The emperor is an important symbol for the Japanese people. The name “Reiwa” for Emperor Naruhito’s reign has been chosen, which the Japanese prime minister explained as a culture created by and nurtured by people who “beautifully care about each other.”
