SUPRA, the legend has returned. The Toyota President Akio Toyoda, said: “Supra is like an old friend that holds a special place in my heart”. After a long-absent Toyota has unveiled the new Supra. Unlike other introduction sports car or hatchback, the name Supra matters, it has a history. Underneath the Supra shares a platform, running gear, engine, gearbox, and large chunks of the interior with the latest BMW Z4. Rather than building a new engine plant for this desired engine, Toyota opted to partner with BMW. The Toyota and BMW teams then worked together to develop their ideas into a prototype, based around a 2-Series coupe with a shortened wheelbase. Regarded as better design than the BMW Z4, the Supra is well proportioned, it’s crisp, responsive and very good to drive.
The Supra’s BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter engine is exceptional. The inline six-cylinder’s numbers alone are compelling — 335 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 365 pounds-feet of torque from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm — but the way that power is delivered keeps the fun-factor high. Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada said fuel efficiency wasn’t a factor when developing the Supra, and that comes through in a few ways, from how responsive the gas pedal is in Sport mode to the way the car forcefully accelerates out of corners and down straightaways. Even so, estimated mileage is still a respectable 10.5/13.2/11.05 kpl city/highway/combined on required premium petrol (Gasoline).
