Holili Border in Tanzania

Vehicle importers using the Holili border in Kilimanjaro region, between Tanzania and Kenya, are protesting against the new importation taxes suddenly decided and implemented from last month.

The parliament has voted a sharp increase of taxes on second hand import vehicles in order to reduce the age of the vehicle fleet, forcing people to import newer less than 8 years old vehicles. It is reported that the tax amount on some vehicles has even doubled.

As a  consequence, many importers had to leave uncleared vehicles parked at the border. The situation is difficult for many traders who have contracted loans to purchase the vehicles. They would be unable to repay their loans if the authorities are not helping them to clear their cars. For the time being, negotiations are going on the Tax Revenue Authority and with government officials.
