About MURANO

With the introduction of the Murano, Nissan will be one of the first carmakers into the medium-size “Crossover” segment. And not only is its exterior design groundbreaking, its use of technology is as well.

And we’ll get to that in a moment, but first, lets talk sheet metal. The Murano certainly is something different. To some FA editors, its a mix of current Nissan themes. A bit of Primera wagon, a dash of the new March/Micra, a hint of the new 350Z, and throw in some of the Quest Concept for good luck. Whether or not you like it, there’s not much denying that it IS different. We’d take a guess and say that if you park this next to a Pathfinder, the Pathy would look pretty dated. The theme for the design was “sculpture in motion,” with wraparound surfaces, Nissan’s new grille design, rounded rear hatch, and swept D-Pillar.

“Rather than being confined to a traditional two-boxes-on-four-wheels, the Nissan Murano’s designers had free rein to create a more dramatic and dynamic exterior that reflects both our buyers’ individuality and the same strong ‘Nissan-ness’ that is emerging in recent designs like the award-winning 2002 Altima and upcoming 350Z™,” said William Kirrane, Nissan Vice President and GM.

When Nissan hinted at a lightweight rear hatch design, they weren’t kidding. This controversial looking door is constructed of “advanced plastics” and is reinforced with steel. Vertically stacked headlamps with optional Xenon bulbs and standard 18 inch wheels and tires round out this rounded package. And just as in the new G35 and 350Z, Nissan has paid special attention to aerodynamics. Use of an underbody engine cover, front and rear tire deflectors, and chin and rear spoilers is certainly something unique for an SUV, or crossover.

“We think the styling is futuristic, imaginative and invigorating - just what buyers have come to expect from Nissan,” said Kirrane.

Following the trend, Nissan has outfitted the Murano’s interior with everything needed for their target market’s “active lifestyles.” The theme is also “first class seating for two couples.” Nissan claims the interior is cohesive with the exterior, with a clean and dynamic design. Continuing Nissan’s new trend of offering an adjustable driver’s environment, the seat is available with 8-way movement, throttle and brake pedals can be adjusted, and a “tilt steering wheel/podded gauge cluster function.” The spilt fold down rear seats can also recline and offer a remote folding feature so they can be moves from the cargo area. Dual zone climate control comes with individual rear A/C vents located in the pillars.

The aluminum-trimmed instrument panel comes with a standard information monitor that displays HVAC, audio, trip control, and the optional navigation system into its “floating” design. There’s also an available 7-speaker Bose audio system.

On the functionality side, the long wheelbase and compact rear multi-link suspension help to create ample storage space. There’s also a two-tiered lockable center console with room for a laptop computer, and door pockets feature a flip-out function for even more space. Under the cargo area, there’s a tray for storage of life’s smaller items.

“As great as it looks from the outside, the interior provides equal appeal with its distinctive fusion of sculpted surface treatments and aluminum accents with indulgent room and operational simplicity,” said Kirrane. “The inner space is solid, sensual and elegant - yet exceptionally practical at the same time.”

Safety wise, front and seat-mounted side airbags are standard along with side front and rear passenger curtain bags. Also standard are front-seat active head restraints that help prevent whiplash.

Murano comes with either front wheel drive or an optional AWD system. Power comes from the 3.5L VQ V6, with “240-plus” horsepower. But the most interesting feature will be Nissan’s continuously variable transmission (CVT). The transmission eliminates the “steps” between gears for a smoother, more efficient operation. The SE models also come with a seven-speed manual shift mode.  (The only other current SUV with a CVT is Saturn's VUE SUV.) Other available features include Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and traction control.

Handling should be fairly good for an SUV, as the Murano is based on the Altima’s FF-L (previously called SS-L) platform. It features 4-wheel independent suspension with rear multi-link and stabilizer bars. Brake Assist and Electronic Brake force Distribution are offered on the 4-wheel vented disc brakes.

“Nissan has a strong heritage of leadership in trucks and SUVs with the original Pathfinder and the category-busting Xterra,” said Kirrane. “We believe the new Nissan Murano, with its breakthrough styling, utility and technology, will have the same kind of impact on the crossover SUV class. It gives Nissan buyers another great choice in powerful, high value SUVs designed to perfectly fit their needs and lifestyles.”
